Hello and welcome to Dulcetonia! I’m Sarah, your twisted choir starter, and I’m going to talk you through everything you need to know about becoming a Dulcetone this Summer term.
Through all the lockdowns (and all the breakdowns), we kept singing. On screens in our living rooms, in parks, in the rain, in masks, in giant churches, in music videos and Christmas singles … we kept singing. Rehearsals are of course now back in person on Thursdays 6pm - 7.30pm at our spiritual home of Middle Street School hall (where the choir was born some 12 years ago) and I look forward to welcoming you in to our delightful leopard-print clad gang. After a two-year C-word hiatus, we are especially delighted to be presenting a big end of term summer show this July at The Wagner Hall - An Evening With The Dulcetones, and I can’t wait! You can expect a high vibe night of glorious a cappella voice, laughs, a spot of audience participation and an all round celebration of connection through singing. We bloody love it, and you will too.
So, if you’re interested in upgrading your Thursdays, connecting with your voice and some great humans, and you love singing, now is the perfect time to get involved.
Are you accepting new members?
Both literally, and emotionally, yes indeed we are. IMPORTANT - as we’ll be working through a set for the show at the end of term (Thursday 21st July), you’ll ideally want to join from the very start of term (Thursday 28th April) to get the most out of the music as we prepare to share with an audience once again. All the guide tracks will be made available to you to practice and listen to at home, and definitely don’t sweat it if you’ll miss the odd one. You’ll be kept updated of which songs we’re doing when, plus I’ll be hosting a confidence boosting bonus ‘relative newbie’ session (date tbc) before the show, along with a full run through the weekend before the show, so you’ll have a change to sing everything if you want to.
You will be well held, and I promise a gig is both great fun and a great motivator!
Is performing mandatory?
Strongly and passionate encouraged, and with a few fun low key mini ones to ease you in and give you the bug (like open mics and busking). But mandatory - no.
What if missed the start of term boat but still want to join?
Basically, as long as you’re cool with playing a bit of catch up (via audio tracks and bonus rehearsals), I’m cool if you’re cool. Cool? Just drop me a line so I can talk you though where we’re at and answer any questions. From June onwards, we will temporarily close the doors to new members while we ride the gig prep wave, mostly for newbies sake, as we’ll be on a roll!
Do I need to be a great singer / audition / read music?
Absolutely not... everything is taught by ear in a fun and informal (and occaisnally sweary, but in a nice way) environment. There are guide audio tracks to our original arrangements that you’ll be hooked up with when you join, to help you practice at home / in the car / in the shower etc. Warning - it’s addictive! We cover lots of vocal technique as we go to help you connect deeply to the power of your own voice and get really playful with it, and like most things in life - the more you do it, the easier it gets. Whether you’re high or low or somewhere in between, there’s a place for you here.
The Dulcetone’s motto is “if in doubt, style it out”. So make of that what you will!
What kind of music will we sing?
A huge variety of classic tunes and unusual treats, from deceptively simple 3 parters to epic 10 part disco! All completely a cappella - that means no naff backing tracks, just the awesome power of the human voice.
Can I try this for free?
Absolutely. We believe in 'try before you buy'! Your first session is always free.
How much does it cost after my free first session?
£9 per week, paid half termly at the start of each block (or whatever’s left of that one) (can vary from 5-7 weeks) See dates here.
